Abstract
Since the process of de-pillarization and secularization in the Netherlands, the position of religion in religious affiliated schools has changed. Now a day, Catholic schools are described as ‘less religious’ when compared to Protestant schools. Does this mean that the religious teaching at Catholic schools and non-religious schools are now resembling? In this study, there is been studied how the Religious education lessons of Catholic schools are similar to the religious teaching at nonreligious schools. This is done from the theoretical field which describes the shift of RE in Catholic schools, active plurality, the emergence of Religious education models and the transformation of religion in the Netherlands. Based on two case studies at a Catholic and non-religious school, I argue that the religious teachings at both schools are indeed resembling. The content and the goals of the subject resemble focusing on learning about and from religion. I argue that the similarities in both schools show that religion is not neglected, but is valued in broader forms. Which therefore corresponds with the idea that religion in Dutch society is transforming and not necessarily declining.
