Abstract
This essay analyses the development of the depiction of women in the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game and identifies a notable change in the release of the latest edition. I contribute to the discourse surrounding this topic by arguing that roleplaying has a mutually influential relationship between the game and its players. Due to the presence of religion in the game in a pagan form, which can be linked to feminist values, the material can function as a tool of empowerment and spiritual and/or moral guidance in promoting matriarchal societal organisation. I then follow this with an assessment of how and why significant changes took place in the depiction of women in Dungeons & Dragons connecting the Gamergate movement and the rise of feminist religion to greater diversity in the game and drawing a reflective connection on what this means about the position and depiction of women in gaming culture. I have concluded with a call for further research into the benefits of roleplay and a message of encouragement to women who want to play Dungeons & Dragons and diversify the voices in the Dungeons & Dragons community.
