Abstract

The French secular conception of laïcité is highly debated and its role in the anti-separatism bill is yet unclear. By examining the division between narrative and legislative dimensions of laïcité, underlying prejudices are illuminated. It’s a very good case to show the complications that republican neutrality and the visibility of religious expressions have in relation to modern Western European Islamophobia. This study analyzes the role of laïcité in the new law confrontant les respects de la Republique in France and aims to investigate how contemporary conceptions of laïcité are linked to republicanism and national identity. It presents an overview of policies that have been criticized for disproportionately targeting the Muslim community. It reveals that these laws are not neutral at all, but rather serve to force integration of Muslim and minority communities into the Republican framework.
