Religious education in Dutch secondary schools: Societal challenges in the classroom.

Abstract
Religious education (RE) in the Netherlands has seen considerable changes over the past sixty years, which can mainly be attributed to (post)secularism and a focus on the self. Pupils’ exposure to these societal tendencies is still underexplored, which is inefficient when it comes to the teachers’ focus on their personal development. After focusing on the historical, media, and teachers’ perspectives on RE, this thesis investigates how pupils experience RE. The data is collected by analyzing the past developments of RE, contemporary influencers, interviews with teachers, classroom observations, and surveys. These analyses show that pupils are unfamiliar with traditional narratives and that the ability of pupils to choose their own topics should be considered in new curriculums if teachers want to reach pupils with matters such as transcendental meaning, citizenship, communal values, and socialization. Even though a major shift from religion to levensbeschouwing (‘worldview’) is apparent, religion is not disappearing, but rather has acquired a different position.
