Abstract
Vaccine hesitancy on religious grounds has previously been explained to be motivated by the rejection of secular experts and instead placing trust on religious authorities. However, qualitative case studies about certain aspects of vaccine hesitancy are scarce and connections have often been made through quantitative surveys. This thesis will provide a deeper view and explain what the underlying motivations for vaccine hesitancy or vaccine acceptance of religious actors are. Through a series of semi-structured interviews, this thesis will focus on studying the reasons of the Orthodox Protestants in the Dutch Bible Belt to accept or refuse a vaccine against the novel coronavirus. I argue that various reasons beyond the religious establishment affect vaccine decision of religious actors during the COVID-19 pandemic. In doing so, this thesis demonstrates that vaccine hesitancy in the Dutch Bible Belt is related to issues in vaccine confidence, while vaccine acceptance is associated with high trust in the vaccine.
