Abstract
The ‘burqa ban’ and the face mask regulations in times of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands have caused a conflicting situation. This new situation has influenced visual representations comparing and depicting the ‘burqa ban’ and the face mask regulation. This thesis offers a new analysis of these visual representations. It looks at how the understandings of freedom and security in relation to religion and public healthcare in the Netherlands are questioned in these visual representations. Focusing on existing literature, a theoretical basis is made on which the analysis of the visual representations is based. This facilitates a deeper understanding of the concepts and the Dutch context on which these visual representations are based and can be analyzed. In doing so, this thesis illustrates how visual representations comparing the ‘burqa ban’ and the face mask regulations question the understanding of freedom and security in relation to religion and public healthcare in the Netherlands.
