Abstract
The issue of citizenship in India has an eventful history that dates back to the independence and creation of the Republic of India in 1947. After the first citizenship Act in 1955, several amendments have been made to document the position of the citizens. The latest amendment was introduced in 2016 and adopted in 2019. This Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) led to uproar and uprisings throughout the country. During the protests, artworks were created for the purpose of conveying the anti-CAA message. This thesis aims at analyzing two of the paintings that were created for this purpose in the state of Assam on the basis of the theory of material agency as set out by Joyce Burkhalter-Flueckiger with the use of both visual and content analysis. This theory has not been applied to the analysis of the use of art during protests. This research, therefore, aims at filling the knowledge gap about the applicability of this theory to likewise events and to gain more understanding about the protest movements in the state of Assam. This paper argues that both the image and the narrative that was created possess a form of agency that are partially separate from human intervention. It does acknowledge that the theory can only partially be applied to the case study of Assam and that further research is required in order to gain a deeper understanding of the matter at hand.
