Abstract

While several researchers already discussed facets of the relationship between ritual and eco-activism and mourning within eco-activism, existing literature has neglected a discussion about mourning from the perspective of ritual. This thesis addresses a gap in the literature by discussing mourning circles by the eco-activist movement Extinction Rebellion and analysing mourning circles through the ritual dimension of eco-activism. An ethnographical observation of an online mourning circle and an analysis of ritual elements in the mourning circle show how mourning-related actions by Extinction Rebellion activists can be studied from the perspective of ritual. By studying the data from the observed mourning circle using a combination of a top-down and bottom-up approach, important themes were established. The main source of mourning of eco-activists appeared to be contrasts in the world, and connections turned out to be essential in the coping tools provided by the mourning circle. It was also established that the creation of a safe transitional space was a central element in the ritual which made mourning and coping possible. This thesis argues that analysing online mourning circles through the lens of the ritual dimension of what Bron Taylor defines as dark green religion increases the understanding of the behaviour and context of the mourning and coping of Extinction Rebellion activists. In doing so, the thesis illustrates that an analysis of actions related to mourning from the perspective of ritual contributes to the general understanding of eco-activists.
