Abstract

The paper examines Indigenous peoples’ reactions to Anglican Christianity while and after attending residential schools in Canada. The paper is based on four personal experiences of residential school survivors. The results show that residential school survivors’ reactions to Christianity are extremely diverse and highly based on individual experiences. However, I argue that the reactions can be categorized into three groups, namely (1) the adoption of the Christian faith, (2) the rejection of Christianity and the Church, and (3) the adoption of both Christian and Indigenous religious elements. Moreover, I examine Indigenous Christianity as a contemporary religious phenomenon in Canada. Subsequently, I discuss and criticize five psychological theories that attempt to explain people’s differing reactions to religion. I argue that those theories might be applicable to some extent but they do not consider residential school survivors’ individual experiences. Thus, to draw a conclusion based on psychological theories, further research is necessary. I hope that the study of Indigenous peoples highlights their rights and needs and contributes to the ongoing process of recognition and reconciliation in contemporary Canada.
