Abstract
This thesis discusses how Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots is represented in 21st century popular culture. It will show how these portrayals are influenced by our contemporary cultural context by using a combination of film analysis and theories on religion and gender. In the films and TV series discussed in this thesis religion is viewed almost entirely as a matter of political expediency. Mary's personal faith is rarely highlighted. This corresponds to the secularization of the present day, in which church attendance dwindles and religion lost its central position When it comes to gender the analysis shows how Mary is more and more portrayed as a powerful woman and as an example for female leaders today. The traditional masculine/feminine distinction is left behind and Mary becomes a character who combines both male and female traits, embodying an ideal of the modem 21st century woman.
